Video regarding IELTS Listening Overview

For the record, this video is made in Vietnamese and thus is relatively hard for other language speakers. That said, English subtitle is available, please turn on. I reckon watching the video will be of great help thanks to the illustration in it. Enjoy!

What is the IELTS Test?

There are too many things to concern when it comes to the ielts. In a nutshell, if you are not a English native speaker, and if your goal is to study or to work in a professional manner in English environment, then the IELTS exam is something you should take into consideration. This certificate will prove your ability to use English and ergo, have no trouble in studying or working oversea.

Other than that, you can study and take the IELTS exam. This can show the extent to which you use English to convey your idea.

Content of the IELTS Listening Test

Once you decide to take the ielts test, the next step is to know what is required. There are four main skills in the IELTS test and Listening is the skill you have to take first.

Listening Test Content

The IELTS Listening Test contains four sections, each of which has ten questions. In each section, there are (usually) one or two types of questions. The typical question types are:

  • Note Completion
  • Multiple Choice
  • Short-answered Question
  • Sentence Completion
  • Matching
  • Mapping
  • Diagram filling

Although it is virtually to predict what comes in the Listening part, there are things we can prepare. First of all, the first section is almost always about to listen to alphabet, number, date, and time. All of these can be prepared (aren’t they?). Furthermore, the second part is usually about how to map things. And as this type of question is relatively hard, it often shows up. Part 3 and Part 4 is related to something academic, so be ready for that. Also, in part 3, be ready for some multiple choice time. And finally, part 4 will ask you to complete a note about a lecture.

Test Procedure

After you have done all of the “check-in” task, you are seated. When it is time, you are (in 2020) given approximately 30 seconds to prepare for your first section. After that, of course, you have to listen to complete the task. Usually, after each task (about 5 questions), you have roughly 30 seconds to prepare for the next part (apart from section 4, in which there is up to 60 seconds). The test will be in 30 minutes. And following the listening test, you have ten minutes to transfer your answer to the listening answer sheet.

How to Prepare IELTS Listening Test

It is hard to say you can actually “prepare” for the exam. However, it is necessary to improve your Listening skills, and your reflex as well. By doing exercises frequently, you can achieve this. Thus, please bear in mind that the exercise you do have to fit with your level. Otherwise, it just wastes your time.

If you are next to English (or the IELTS exam), I suggest this Listening of Note Completion. There are many exercises regarding this type of questions. So try to be patient!

But if you feel confident about this, try to complete the IELTS Recent Actual Test. There are six parts with 30 tests, enjoy!
